Bullying Survey and Results

Over the past month, our class has been discussing Bullying (in greater detail) and what we can do as a class to ensure everyone feels safe at school.  While I would like to report that no Bullying exists in our classroom, school or community, Bullying does exist and our students need to be educated and informed as to what they can do.  If you believe that your child is being Bullied, it is important that you contact the school directly.  It is very uncommon for a student to Bully in front of an adult so it is often very difficult for an adult to know what is happening.  If students, parents and the school work together, it is hoped that the school can create a "Safe" environment for all it learners.

It is important to note that School and I take Bullying very seriously.  In most cases, it may take some time or regular monitoring to ensure Bullying stops.  Therefore, parents are encouraged to follow-up with the school and monitor the situation from their end.  Any instances of Bulling will always be brought to the attention of the classroom teacher, Principal and School Counselor.  If parents ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me (agenda, phone: 250-428-2051, mblick@sd8.bc.ca).

Trends -- Out of 27 students

16 students noted that they have not been bullied over the last two months.

In most cases, the students who are bullied or see bullying do not tell the teacher.  Therefore, we need to educate our students about informing the teacher.  However, students in the class felt more confortable telling their parents.  When parents learn of this, please contact the school.  Even if it appears like a small incident, it can help us with tracking incidents to see if there is a pattern.

Where is Bullying Taking Place (Out of the 11 Respondents):
a)  On the school property outside of the school (playground) 6 respondents
b)  In the classroom (while the teacher was out of the room -- before school, recess, etc..) 2 respondents
c)  At a friends house (often when there are more than one person visiting) 2 respondents
d) At the Bus Stop 2 respondents
e)  On the bus. 1 respondent
f)  At after school activities  1 respondent
g)  Somewhere else outside of school.  1  respondent
h)  At home (often by a sibling)  2  respondents

Bullying is far more prevalent with girls.  It often takes the form of:
a)  Excluding them from a group or activity.
b) Commenting on their appearance (hair or clothes)
c)  Competing with each other for the attention of a particular student.

At the end of the Bullying Survey, students were allowed the opportunity to mention name(s) of people who they believe have bullied them or that they think they may have witnessed Bullying another person.

If your child names was mentioned on two or more occasions, I will be phoning home.
